A downloadable Visual Novel for Windows, macOS, and Linux

A free otome visual novel/Ace Attorney-style investigation game set in the 1930s, currently with a demo available and the full game expected to be released in Q4 of 2023. You play as Mae (or the name of your choice), a detective pried out of London to investigate the suspicious death of one Henry Graves.

But when you arrive at the dead man's country manor, things aren't quite as you expected. Your clients don't take you seriously, the staff is behaving suspiciously, and the will reading is one step from becoming a brawl.

On the bright side, there's no shortage of handsome men about the place.

Less cheerfully, some of them may shortly become murderers. Or corpses.

 - Main Characters -

- Story and Gameplay -

After the short common route, the game diverges into one of four routes. Each one is associated with a love interest, and each has unique murder(s) and unique murderer(s). It's up to you to solve those murders, using point and click investigation to collect evidence that you can shove in the faces of the necessary people in order to progress and survive.

In the meantime, you'll be getting closer to one of the four eligible men around the place, since as the old saying goes: nothing brings two people closer than trying to figure out how to survive a killer in a creepy English manor while trapped by a snowstorm and malicious sabotage. That's a saying, right?

If you live through all that, there's still the original murder that brought you there - who, if anyone, killed Henry Graves?

- The Demo-

The demo of this game was made for Otome Jam/Josei Jame 2023 and makes up about 15-20% of the full game. The demo includes:

  • About 30k words, or around 3 hours of playtime
  • The full common route
  • 20% of Blake's route, up to the first murder
  • 20% of James' route, past the first murder and through the first investigation
  • 14 unique backgrounds
  • 12 characters
  • 6 CGs
  • 2 murders
  • And 1 detective at the end of her tether

The full game will be out for free at some point probably later this year, after I've slept for a week and stopped hating these people and their ridiculously hard to draw outfits.

Follow me on Twitter for updates and possible bonus pictures of the boys with animal ears, because it's going to happen one of these days.

- Rating -

Well, this is a murder mystery. Nobody is safe. Love interests will die... and kill. You may also die. Actually, you're probably the one who's going to die the most, given your investigative nature and the general risk to a murderer from having a detective around.

Still, we're more BBC than Saw over here, so nothing that Agatha Christie would have fainted over. Let's put it at T for teens.

- Features -

Point and click investigation

Each body comes with one or more investigation screens, though they're not shown here to prevent spoilers. Look around to find the evidence you need, which will then be stored in your evidence collection menu. Revisit it whenever you want, and submit it when you need to prove someone's guilt... or innocence.

The family tree

Track the characters and their relationship to each other on the family tree. In the demo, that's all this does. In the full game, this will also be where you can track what you've found out about people across the various routes, including what they've told you each time. Which brings us to-

A consistent world

Okay, we've all played games where people change from route to route, right? They do horrible things in one route and then poof, nothing happens the next time around. That's not the case here. If someone tells you one thing in one route and then another in the next, they are lying to you. If someone murders someone in one route, they'd do it again - there's just a reason why they can't or won't. And it's almost always because of something you did.

All this to say, there are eight murders over the course of the full game and only eleven characters besides you. Watch your back.

Flavor choices

This is a house full of irritating people, and you need to be able to express that in your own way. It's up to you if you want to be icily polite or go around punching people, have a police background or a somewhat disreputable past. Just try not to kill anyone. There's enough of that going on already.

You can put your hat on

Quite literally, this is what that means. You have a hat and a monocle and you can whip them on and off as suits you. Why? Well, why wouldn't you?

Credits and Thanks

Because I'm not bright, I chose to do the writing, programming, and art assets for the jam by myself.

However, in a brilliant surprise, this entire process was hugely assisted by the all-around fantastic Shar. They threw themselves voluntarily into the fray and not only improved every part of the flow and structure of the overall writing, but also ensured that any actual British person playing this hopefully won't be driven to murder the Canadian who wrote it.

They also provided testing, gave incredibly useful feedback, and may or may not have yandere-ified at least one character.

I have also been blessed with additional help from a lady yet unnamed, who tested the routes and programming to the limits of their endurance. Amazingly, she did this even though I originally did not make it clear to her that this was supposed to be a romance game and she was therefore quite confused by all the fit guys popping up in the middle of the murders.

Finally, I originally planned, in a fit of madness, to try to do the music myself during the game jam. That was a mistake, and all my thanks go out to Kevin MacLeod and Rafael Krux for providing their excellent music to the world for free. Specific credits for each song and sound effect used are included in a text file with the download of the demo.

HELP I GOT A END OF INVESTAGATION...........

(1 edit) (+2)

The mystery in this game is so good! When we reach to THAT part im so excited to investigate, also, the protagonist is such a relatable character, i already lover her so much. Im so excited for when the game release, Blake already caught my attention.

(+3)

The fans want to know: where are our husbands?!?!?! (Eagerly awaiting more amazing banter between this chaotic cast.) <3

(+2)

hi, any preview of the release date?

(+2)

Ok, I already commented a while back, but I have to say this. This game has been living rent-free in my head since I played the demo - I am so in love with it. I cannot wait (but I can) for the full release! Also I am so, so, so impressed that you made this demo in two months, as a SOLO dev!? That makes it even more amazing. I hope progress is going well, and you are doing well! So so looking forward to the full release, this is like the most perfect game for me.

(+3)

> finishes the demo after falling in love with james

> checks the game page once more only to find that one of james' cons is that he will probably get murdered

muffin beloved get behind me ๐Ÿคบ

i mean detective work + the possibility of romancing a killer what else can i say. the game simply has it all. 10/10.

(+1)

blake <3333 I'm so excited for this game!

(+1)

I just played the demo, and it was so good!! I am in love with this game, it is incredible so far. I'm especially looking forward to Adrian, but I've warmed up to James after the demo. Can't wait for the full game, really amazing work!

(+1)

hii just replayed the demo bc it's just that good! cant wait for full version

(1 edit) (+2)

The description on this page secured my commitment to this title long before I so much as touched the download button for the demo. The humor is to die for (no pun intended...probably). The demo itself is sublime (I'm thus far quite fond of Blake, he gives me Sebastian Michaelis vibes and I see someone else already noted his similarity to Muzan) and the writing in the demo is just as entertaining as on this page. I will keep my eye on this one and so should everyone else!

(+2)

Ooooooh I'm definitely down for this! I had a great time playing the demo (and I definitely scrolled back to choose a different option when the answer wasn't what I wanted XD). I love that my choices can make a difference in dialogue down the line! I chose to punch James on my first meeting, so when I talked to Blake later I got the option to say "I've already punched one person in this house, don't make me punch another" and it was so satisfying to see XD I look forward to seeing the full version of this! Definitely will keep my eye out!

(+2)

Is there any ETA as to when the full version will be out? This demo was so much fun!!

(+2)

It said in the game description that it's predicted to be released in Q4 this year, so hopefully sometime between now and the end of the year.

(+2)

murder? romance? handsome husbandos ? yandere? TAKE MY MONEY !!!

(+2)

I really like how we can look for evidence in the game and have to select pieces to present to people. The art, story, and music -- all of it -- is wonderful. I look forward to the full game!

(+1)

i love this its rare to find otomes like this one cant wait for the full game to be released and the mysteries to be solved.

(1 edit) (+1)

This game is great so far, I have spend entirely too much time thinking and doubting and rolling back dialogue to double check things, and I've only played one route of the demo.

A little confused about the music cues though? The (!) cue for clues is pretty self explanatory but I've also heard a more musical, nicer one twice though I was never able to recreate it. Rolling back or loading a previous save and choosing the same choices I never heard it again. And it was only when Blake was on screen  It might be a sign.

It is enormously cool that you're double-checking things! I was hoping people would, but worried people would just think it was lazy writing when things contradicted each other, so that's fabulous to hear. The full game will let you add things people say to their profiles on the family tree screen that persist over all the routes, so hopefully that'll make it more fun. ^_^

For the music cues... that sounds mysterious even to me. The only one I can think of is the short version of the cues that play on the day intro screens. That one is quite short, and usually gets turned off after only one line when it occurs during the game itself, so if you click a bit faster because you've already read things it might never reoccur?

Anyway, I'll definitely check that out and see if there's something I can track down there. Thanks for telling me! ๐Ÿ˜Š

(+4)

love this game! the visuals are incredible, the writing is *chefs kiss* and the depth of the mystery is incredible. it really hooked me and i cant wait for the full release (and to see my 'muffin' again ๐Ÿคญ)

thanks for the amazing demo, author! ^^

(+3)

Thank you for playing and enjoying it! And for liking James, muffin that he is. I plan to give you a selection of nicknames to choose from for him, so I'll be interested which one people like the best. ^_^

(+3)

This has all my favorite things! Otome with great writing, replayable, murder mystery.. Can't WAIT for the full release!

That is excellent to hear! I'll probably be coming back to comments like these over and over again over the next few months to keep my motivation high, so thanks for taking the time to comment! ๐Ÿ˜Š

(+3)

This was so much fun! I definitely appreciated being able to actually, y'know, investigate the mystery and piece things together, which is a mechanic that is sadly lacking in otome. Almost forgot to don my hat and monocle while in detective mode, for shame! And while I enjoyed nosing around the estate and coolly brushing off James, I've got my eyeballs squarely on Nick. Can't wait for his route!

(+1)

So happy you had fun!  There should be even more investigation elements added in the full game, so I hope you enjoy it! I may add more things to put on and take off just for fun - I was severely tempted to add a Poirot moustache on a stick, for example. ๐Ÿ˜

And you are... not alone in your feelings on Nick. ๐Ÿ˜… I just posted a dev blog today that includes a bonus new picture of him since I'm pleased but baffled at the great response he's gotten.

(+2)

I so enjoyed playing this, please finish the game so I can continue!  Love the detective story, the characters, the MC especially!

(+1)

I definitely will, and I hope you like it when it's done! Glad you like the MC, I'm fond of her myself. ^_^

(+2)

I love the details in this game. It's one where choosing one phrase or attitude changes the dialogue or the impression several minutes later in another context. It's a choice which influence the story.

The MC is really smart, we can see her reasonning, it's a nice change and perfect for a detective story. It's something we can see even outside of the "investigating times".

I was pleasantly surprised to discover actually 3 endings possible in the demo and waitforit 2 murders. People ! Considering your choices the first victim is NOT THE SAME ! Yes capitals were needed. It's awesome. I could investigate only one of the two murders (I guess time was lacking for the other) but whoa.

And so many suspects. They truly are all lying. Even though I have still some sweet spot for some of them. With the demo I have no idea who is guilty. So many things are suspicious. So many people too. Just take the clerk no one sees at all the morning after. Is he dead ?

Oh talking about the clerk I thought one question was missing after reading the testament (specially when you decide to go back and question the clerks; even though it's a question you can actually ask other people family members or even workers; people need witnesses after all) : Do you know the content of the old testament ?

Let's hold our thoughts on the current testament to our MC ah, ah or even the grandfather... I'm really curious to know if I missed anything in the possible endings of the demo so please tell me.

I really loved the ambiance and to discover our suspects. I mean our ROs or LIs as you prefer. Blake is my favorite so far. I had to say it since nobody else mentioned him.

Wow, this is great - I love getting to hear this much about your impressions of the game! ๐Ÿ˜Š You are quite right about the endings (both the number of them and that time was the reason you didn't get to investigate the other one, lol.)

You are also extremely right that everyone is lying to you. In fact, I can't actually think of one who doesn't tell you at least one lie over the course of the demo, so good instincts there! Thanks for the note on the dialogue too, I'll check that for version 1.1!

Also, laughing at the wording there at the end - yes, love interests and also suspects, and sometimes more one than the other. And I love Blake too, so I'm glad he's somebody's favorite. I should have given Nick a looser shirt. ^_^

(+1)

What a fantastic Demo. Nick is my favourite so far.

Thank you! And thank you for liking Nick, the surly twit. He makes up for in easiness to draw what he lacks in difficulty to write. ^_^

(+1)

I have just finished the demo and DAMN, what a cliff hanger!!

(+1)

Okay, now I'm curious which one you consider more of a cliff hanger - the partially solved murder or the completely new one? Either way, I consider it a great compliment. ๐Ÿ˜

BOTH!!

Absolutely loving the demo!!! Cannot wait until the full game is released and I can binge the whole thing. Iโ€™m fascinated by the mystery, intrigued by the characters, and I absolutely love the MC. Fantastic art as well! I particularly love the MCโ€™s different facial expressions - so emotive!

(+1)

Ah, thank you so much! I'm glad you like so much about it - the MC only had a few facial expressions up until I actually started putting the thing together, at which point it became extremely important that she be able to roll her eyes. ^_^

(+4)

i love the dynamic of mc and james already! can't wait for more ๐Ÿ˜

(+3)

Oh my, thank you for liking James! So far people keep saying that Nick is their favourite and I'm always like, "Was I not clear how rude he is?"

And thank for letting me know, too. ^_^

(+2)

or "I'm sorry was I not clear how much of an ASSHAT he is??"

(1 edit)

some of us just blatantly like them mean asf lol

(+1)

The best ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’ฏ cant wait for full game! The atmosphere and the premise of story bravo!

Oh, that's great to hear! Thank you for taking the time to tell me - it's really fantastic to know someone is looking forward to the full game. ^_^

(+1)

We need more of these mystery otomes! 10/10

I sincerely agree, because I want to play them. Thank you for the rating! ^_^

(+1)

I love mystery and this plot sure caught my attention

Excellent! Hope you enjoy the demo and the many murder-able people therein. ^_^

(+2)

love the pretty gui, muted color palettes and the 'investigation' portion of gameplay with gathering clues and submitting them. Thanks for being forgiving and letting the player try several times.

That's great, I'm so glad you liked it! Particularly the gui, which was essentially just me and the line tool staring each other down for a few hours.

And yes, you can try as many times as you want - I myself have lost ignominiously too many times in these types of games, so I want to save others from my fate. The full game will have substantially more investigation, possibly even in the vn sections, so I hope you'll enjoy it when it's here. ^_^

(+2)

can't wait to try it :)

Thank you! It's out now, assuming I actually have done the upload process correctly. Hope you enjoy it. ๐Ÿ˜Š

(+1)

omg i can't wait just got home downloading and going to play now :D

I'm so glad! I am unreasonably happy to hear that. ^_^

When will the demo be released?

(+2)

It'll definitely be out on Friday, because I am meeting the Otome Jam deadline even if it kills me.

And thanks for asking, I should edit the page to put that information there as well. Hope you enjoy it when it's here! :)

(+1)(-1)

Can't wait for the release, I'm really looking forward to it and I hope it gets the recognition it deserves!!!

Thank you, that's so nice of you to say - and the muppet is an honor I'm not sure I deserve. Hope you like it when it's here! ^_^

(+1)

Muzan?

(+1)

Okay, I did not get the reference until I googled it, but that is amazing. I have never regretted more that I didn't put hats on all the guys. Something for version 1.2, I suppose!
